Study African Studies in Cologne

The African Studies program in Cologne is internationally oriented. Many of our teaching staff are from abroad or have worked there for a long time. Most of our students are looking for a new perspective on Africa and a new perspective on the world, culture and language in all their diversity.

Accordingly, the course opens up many opportunities to work in a broad academic field. In addition, it provides knowledge and skills that can also be applied innovatively in non-academic professions. We do not train students for a profession, but for an academic career as well as for many activities in the media, museum work, journalism and international relations.

All our students learn at least one African language. The permanent offer includes Hausa and Swahili lessons as well as courses in Egyptian languages and occasionally in other African languages (e.g. in so-called Khoisan languages).

In teaching and research, we address current topics of cultural change, such as language in tourism, youth language and social media, cultural and colonial heritage, indigenous groups, inequality and post-colonial criticism. We maintain very good exchange relationships with many universities in Africa and beyond, which enrich our teaching and research.
